Policy Coverage Guide

If you are changing insurance companies, you may be concerned about making sure that you enjoy the same great coverage with your new company as your old insurer. One way to investigate this is to read your new company’s policy coverage guide. Your new coverage guide can be found on your company’s website, on your policy paperwork, or from your new insurance agent.

A policy coverage guide outlines exactly what your new insurance policy covers and what it does not. At a minimum, your new company’s insurance coverage guide should explain the policy’s limitations and covered events, and should be easy to understand. If you have questions, your agent or a representative from the company should be able to answer them.

The ideal coverage guides are online and have subdivisions that allow you to easily find information on any particular coverage questions you have. For example, State Farm Insurance offers a “learning guide” with sections on particular types of coverage and commonly-asked questions, such as “Does my policy cover a rental car?” These types of coverage guides avoid legalese and language that would make them difficult to understand, and simply give you the coverage guidelines in easy-to-understand sections.

Of course, you may have a particular coverage question not answered by these websites or by your company’s printed material. In that case, the best course of action is to question your agent or a representative of your insurance company about your particular situation. It is better if you can have your questions answered before you have an accident, so try to collect answers about particular situations that may apply to you before you have to file a claim.

Coverage guides should include information on your liability policy as well as your optional policies, such as collision, comprehensive, uninsured motorists, and gap coverage. If you cannot find your coverage guides for any of these policies, contact your agent for a copy.

You can start your search for your insurance company’s policy guides by visiting your company’s website. Somewhere on the home page, you should find a link for “Coverage” or “Policy Guidelines.” If you do not, try reading about the company’s policy by clicking on the links for “Auto Coverage” and “Liability Policies.” If none of these lead you to the coverage guides, it is possible that you must be logged in as a customer to access this information. If this is the case, obtain your login information for your policy and log in as a customer. Once you do, you should be able to click on your policy and find your coverage guidelines easily.

If you cannot locate your policy guidelines online, call or email your company for a copy. You can also call your agent or company representative and request that a copy of the coverage guidelines be mailed to you in hard copy form. You should receive a copy of your coverage guidelines when you purchase your policy; if you do not, be sure to ask the agent or company for a copy. Keep these guidelines in a safe place so that you can refer to them when necessary. You should also receive timely updates from the company if your policy coverage guidelines change.
